Today is Tuesday
By LP Chase

Tommy is anxious about his very first session with a counselor, Dr. Bob. He wonders about his friends finding out, and he worries that needing to see a counselor means something is wrong with him. Eventually, Tommy is relieved to find that Dr. Bob is actually very kind, and so Tommy becomes a little more comfortable with the concept of counseling. However, he still doesn't want any of his friends to know where he goes on Tuesday afternoons for fear they will tease him. As the story unfolds, Tommy gains enough confidence to tell his friends the truth. With Dr. Bob's help, and the support of his friends, Tommy begins to have a whole new outlook.

Book Reviews

Written in large, spaced-out type for beginning readers, Today is Tuesday is a short storybook by counselor L.P. Chase about a young boy named Tommy who attends weekly therapy appointments. Afraid that his friends will think he's "crazy", or that his mom will find out what he talks about, Tommy resists his appointments and hides them from others. In time, though, Tommy learns that he's not the only one who needs to talk to a doctor, and his situation might not be so unusual. His Tuesday psychologist visits gradually help him become more comfortable, confident, and relaxed in life. A handful of simple black-and-white illustrations by Vickie Froelich intersperse this ideal introduction to understanding therapy visits for children who attend counseling sessions or who have family members or friends who go. Highly recommended.

Five Star Rating, Midwest Book Review

Today is Tuesday is an invaluable resource in helping prepare kids for their initital experience with therapy. It truly captures the key issues essential to helping a child overcome their anticipatory fears and anxieties about going to a "therapist"; which is often at the root of their percieved "resistance". It is a wonderful tool for parents and other supportive caregivers desiring to make this experience a positive one for their child.

As a school psychologist, Today is Tuesday provides me with the opportunity to discuss counseling with children and helps me discuss common concerns that kids often have about attending therapy. Chase has captured the essential issues that kids experience when they initially begin therapy. Her simple, yet realistic story allows kids to relate to Tommy and the feelings that he is experiencing.

After reading Today is Tuesday, by L.P. Chase, I came away very impressed with the author's depiction of a child's thoughts, feelings, and emotions while dealing with a very sensitive subject- a child going to therapy. The author describes important issues that a child deals with when facing the issue of therapy, such as how it will affect his or her friendships and relationships, confidentiality, reasons for going, and feelings of being alone. The overall honesty and accuracy of the book will no doubt be a very useful tool in working with children facing questions about attending therapy.

Today is Tuesday is an excellent tool to be used for elementary to middle school aged clients. This tale of a young boy who overcomes his anxieties about the perceived societal shame of attending counseling sessions is a comforting story to be shared with our youngest clients. Chase carefully addresses the fears and anxieties that many young clients face prior to meeting their counselor. This book is an educational tool showing the reader the feelings they may be experiencing are shared by many, and there is no shame in taking care of yourself. I recommend this book as a staple in every counselor's library.

Today is Tuesday is a wonderful account of a child's fears about seeking therapy. The author does an excellent job in portraying the therapeutic process as being healthy and normal. This book is very "child friendly", and easy to read and understand. I plan on using this book with my clients as an introduction to the therapeutic relationship in my future practice.
